Heart Disease Project

In this unit, we learned about women’s heart disease. In class, we learned that one in every three women are affected by heart disease. For our project, we were challenged to think of solutions for heart disease. Knowing the grim statistics for heart disease in women motivated my group to come up with a creative solution.

My group members and I brainstormed many different ideas and finally settled on one of them. We decided to base our project on cholesterol.

We researched how cholesterol is involved in heart disease. Too much cholesterol in the blood can clog one’s arteries. When there is a build up of cholesterol in the wall of one’s arteries, this begins the process of atherosclerosis. There are two types of cholesterol in the blood, LDL and HDL. LDL is the bad artery clogging cholesterol which one wants to minimize. HDL is a high-density lipoprotein which is good for you. Another fat in our bloodstream is triglycerides. Triglycerides have shown to also possibly be linked to heart disease.

To help prevent and lower the chances of one developing heart disease, my group produced a juice consisting of blueberries, bananas, apples, orange juice, canola oil and a fiber boost. Both blueberries and orange juice are high in antioxidants which help to lower LDL levels while increasing HDL. Apples and bananas are high in fiber which help to lower cholesterol. Lastly, canola oil contains Q10 which decreases LDL. All together, these ingredients would help one to lower and maintain their cholesterol levels, in turn decreasing their chances for heart disease.

Now that we had a product, we wanted to test if women would actually want to use it in their everyday life. We gave out 30 samples. 24 of the 30 participants liked the juice and could see themselves drinking it everyday. Six participants said they would not consume the product everyday.

My group and I really enjoyed this project as it allowed us to help find a solution to a problem we all feel so passionately about. As women, heart disease can affect any one of us, so it is important to try and help any way we can!
